At Camp Fish Tales’ annual Fish Races Fundraiser, the camp presented the 3rd annual Ben Wackerle “Keep the Fire Burning Award” to Thomas N. Thelen, a long-time supporter, fundraiser, and board member of Camp Fish Tales.
Wackerle was one of the “super friends” who were the reason behind the start of Camp Fish Tales. Wackerle died in September 2016 at age 44. One of the traditions at camp is to take the ashes from the last camp fire of the week and restart the first campfire of the season with those ashes. Hence, keeping the spirit of camp alive and “Keeping the Fire Burning.”
“Mr. Thelen has been instrumental in the construction of new structures at camp as well putting in procedures that helped bring Camp Fish Tales to the next level,” Executive Director Shannon Forshee said. “His commitment to camp has made him the recipient of the Ben Wackerle Keep the Fire Burning award.”

April 15, 2019 – Kiwassee Kiwanis Foundation Vice President, Duane Townley, presented a check to Camp Fish Tales for $6,400 to Camp Executive Director Shannon Forshee and board member Karl Ieuter. The funds are being used to help furnish the camp’s new 24-bed cabin due to open for campers on June 2, 2019. “We are very thankful to the Kiwassee Kiwanis Foundation for being so generous to Camp Fish Tales. This new furniture will be a wonderful addition to the camp,” said Executive Director, Shannon Forshee.
April 15, 2019 – Thank you to the Midland Soccer Club for donating soccer goals they were no longer using. We will be using them for our new sports field at camp! The campers appreciate it.
April 7, 2019 – What an amazing weekend of giving!
The Ability Experience is the philanthropic initiative of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity. They strive to instill a passion for lifelong service in the fraternity members while helping to empower people living with disabilities.
They did our front landscaping, helped re-vamp the interior of several of our cabins and took on several other projects around camp. Their fundraising efforts throughout the year allowed them to make a $5000 donation to camp. ”Create a community one relationship at a time where all abilities are recognized and valued.”
We are thankful!
